Wormwood, or Artemisia absinthium, has been growing across temperate regions for centuries. You’ll find it native to parts of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa, and it has since made its way into gardens and wild spaces all over the world. It’s a hardy perennial with tall, branching stems and soft silver-green leaves that naturally thrive in dry, disturbed, or uncultivated soil.
The name Artemisia comes from Artemis, the Greek goddess of the wild. According to legend, she gifted this plant to Chiron, the father of medicine. Its common name, wormwood, likely comes from its old use for clearing intestinal worms, though some say it may come from an early Anglo-Saxon word meaning “mind preserver.” Traditionally, wormwood has been used throughout Europe to support digestion. In ancient Greece it was a go-to for intestinal parasites and as a general wellness herb. Today, it’s often used in teas, tinctures, and other herbal formulas.
The extract itself is very bitter, so many people take it in a little water or juice. It pairs well with other bitters like burdock, or can be blended into supportive formulas. You can also add a few drops to teas such as peace tea or detox tea for an extra herbal boost.
Dosage: Children (2-4 years): 0.1-0.2 mL (2-5 drops); Children (5-9 years): 0.1-0.3 mL (4-10 drops); Adolescents & Adults (10+): 0.3-0.6 mL (8-20 drops). All doses should be taken 1-3 times daily.
